Benjamin Netanyahu Returns as Israel's Prime Minister
Netanyahu's Political Journey
Benjamin Netanyahu's rise to prominence began in 1993 with his election as chair of Likud, Israel's largest political party. He subsequently became Leader of the Opposition and emerged as a formidable figure in Israeli politics.
1996 Election Victory
In 1996, Netanyahu led Likud to victory in the parliamentary elections, becoming Israel's youngest-ever Prime Minister at the age of 46. His victory was narrow, with a margin of only about 1% over his opponent, Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
First Term as Prime Minister
During his first term as Prime Minister, Netanyahu engaged in ongoing negotiations with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) regarding the West Bank and the possibility of a Palestinian state. He also implemented economic reforms and sought to reduce government spending.
